EXAM RULES

ALL STUDENTS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS AND THOSE FROM OTHER DEPARTMENTS TAKING ECON CLASSES NEED TO ABIDE BY THE FOLLOWING EXAMINATION RULES

Admission and General Conduct

All students taking the exam will be asked to bring their METU ID Card to the exam and place it in a conspicuous place on their desks.
The proctor of the exam has authority to assign seats to students. If need arises, the proctor may ask any student to change seats.
Students shall not communicate with one another in any manner whatsoever during the examination.
Students who are ill and unable to present themselves for the exam must submit a medical certificate to the instructor no later than a week after the exam. If a medical report is not presented, no show will result in one lost exam attempt.
Any form of dishonest behavior during exams, which includes but not limited to; cheating, plagiarizing and inappropriate collaboration for take-home exams and assignments will ensure a failing grade for the course and will result in further disciplinary action in line with university regulations depending on the severity of the violation.

Time Management

Students who are late by more than 15 minutes to the exam will not be admitted.
Students taking the exam will not be able to leave the exam room before the first 20 minutes are up and during the last 10 minutes.
Students leaving the exam room for one reason or the other – including to use the restroom – will not be admitted back to the exam.
Students with special needs need to apply to the Department and present their case and supporting documents before the examination.

Electronic Devices and Notes

Carrying any kind of active electronic device (mobile phone, smart watch, etc.) will be treated as a cheating attempt. Students are not permitted to have wireless communication devices (e.g. mobile phones) on their desks under any circumstances.
Calculators may be allowed in certain exams. Instructors of such courses will let students know ahead of time if a calculator is allowed in the exam. Students are not allowed to use calculator functions of mobile devices.
All electronic devices must be switched off and removed from the desk. All books, lecture notes, coats, bags, pencil cases etc. should be removed from the desk.
No part of an answer book should be torn out and all answer books and other material supplied in the exam room should be returned to the proctor/instructor at the end of the exam. Please do not attempt to remove any answer books or question papers from the exam room.

ECONOMICS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS DURING REGISTRATIONS

Q:	Can I take more courses than my normal credited course load?
A:	The normal credited course load per semester in the Department of Economics is 5. However a) With the request of the student and the approval of the advisor, a maximum of one course can be increased for students with a GPA of at least 2.00; b) With the request of the student and the approval of the advisor, a maximum of two courses can be increased for students with a GPA of at least 2.50.

Q:	Can I take fewer courses than my normal credited course load?
A:	The minimum credited course load in a semester is 3. In justified cases, this burden can be reduced with the approval of the academic advisor and the department chair. There is no minimum course load requirement for students who can meet graduation requirements at the end of the registered semester.

Q:	Can I take courses with Not Included (NI) status?
A:	Yes, you can. However, a) The status of courses taken as NI cannot be changed after the registration process (Add-drop) for the relevant semester is completed. b) Courses taken under NI status are counted in the student's course load in the relevant semester. c) A maximum of two courses with NI status can be taken in a semester. d) The status of courses cannot be changed to NI after the registration process for the relevant semester is completed.

Q:	Can I retake the course I want whenever I want?
A:	There is a 3-semester rule. Courses with a grade of DD and above can be repeated within three semesters following the semester in which the course was taken. This rule does not apply to students who are on probation or students who have received passing grades from all courses for graduation but have not achieved the required grade point average.

Q:	Can I take another course instead of the taken elective (REPLACE procedure)?
A:	Instead of repeating the taken elective courses, other elective courses can be taken with the approval of the advisor, provided that they are within the framework of the curriculum and in the same category/type. Individual cases are evaluated by the relevant Faculty Administrative Board upon the recommendation of the department chair. It is highly recommended that the REPLACE process be completed within the registration period.

Q:	The elective course I have taken (within the department or faculty) appears as "Free elective" in the system, what should I do?
A:	The status of elective courses (FREE ELECTIVE, DEPARTMENTAL ELECTIVE, ELECTIVE) is not important for graduation, the important thing is the code of the course and the department it was taken from. What is important for graduation is how many department electives and how many elective courses are taken from in-faculty and non-faculty departments.

Q:	Can I take resit exam from the course I failed?
A:	Resit exam is applied to students who are expected to graduate. Students who are expected to graduate have the right to take resit exams in 2 courses. The resit exam grade replaces the final exam grade, and the other grades the student received in the course remain valid.

Q:	I took the Stat 201 course to replace Econ 205 in a semester before the 2020-2021 Spring semester. Will my lesson be considered valid?
A:	Stat 201 course taken before the 2020-2021 Spring semester can be counted instead of Econ 205. As of the 2020-2021 Spring semester, the equivalence of Econ 205 and Stat 201 courses has been canceled, so the Stat 201 course taken instead of Econ 205 in the 2020-2021 Spring semester and after will not be counted. You need to submit a student petition form for the procedure.

Q:	Which year is considered the starting year of the program in the department?
A:	The year you start the program in the department is the year you start as a freshman. The year you first register to the university or start the English Preparatory Department is not the year you start the department.

Q:	I started the program in the department as a freshman in September 2016 or later. How many 1xx coded electives can I take at most?
A:	According to the most recent program (as of September 2016), you have the right to take at most 1 elective course with the code 1xx, excluding the elective ECON 108 course.

ECONOMICS GRADUATE PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT ISSUES TO BE CONSIDERED DURING REGISTRATIONS

1.	Each graduate program student must enroll in the Thesis (Econ 599, Econ 699) course of the advisor faculty member in the relevant section and simultaneously enroll in Special Studies courses with code 8xx for master's degrees and Special Topics courses with code 9xx for doctorate degrees. Section codes of faculty members and Special Studies/Special Topics course codes can be found in the list at Current Students page of the Economics website.

2.	Master's program students must enroll in Econ 595 Seminar and Econ 687 Research Methods and Ethics courses before the completion of courses (within 4 semesters).

3.	Doctoral program students must enroll in Econ 696 Seminar and Econ 687 Research Methods and Ethics courses before the completion of courses (within 4 semesters for post-MS PhD and 6 semesters for post-BSc PhD).

4.	Doctoral program students must submit the Thesis Monitoring Committee (TIK-Tez İzleme Komitesi) Appointment Form to the GSSS (SBE) within 1 month after completing the doctoral qualification exam.

5.	Doctoral program students must take the Thesis Proposal Defense within 6 months of completing the doctoral qualification exam.

6.	For the student whose thesis proposal is accepted, TIK meets at least twice a year, once between January-June and July-December. The student submits a written report to the committee members at least one month before the meeting date. This report includes a summary of the work done so far and the work plan to be carried out in the next period. The student's thesis work is determined as successful (S) or unsuccessful (U) by the committee. A student who is found unsuccessful by the committee twice in a row or three times intermittently is dismissed from the program.

7.	A student who does not attend the thesis proposal defense within the time specified in the previous article without a valid excuse is considered unsuccessful and the thesis proposal is rejected.

8.	In order for the student's thesis to be finalized, a TIK report must be submitted once every six months until graduation. The number of TIK reports must be at least three.

9.	In case you are registering for ECON 500, the course category must be ELECTIVE or DEPARTMENTAL ELECTIVE.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR MINOR REGISTRATION

1.	To complete the Minor program, you must take a total of 6 ECON coded courses:
i.	ECON 101 / ECON 211 and ECON 102 / ECON 212 cannot be counted as minor or equivalent courses! Because these courses are a prerequisite for admission to the minor.
ii.	ECON 201 and ECON 202 must be taken (MUST).
iii.	AT LEAST TWO OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES SHOULD BE TAKEN: ECON 311 (PREREQUISITE: ECON 202), ECON 312 (PREREQUISITE: ECON 201), ECON 203, ECON 204, ECON 361, ECON 301 (PREREQUISITE: ECON 206), ECON 302 (PREREQUISITE: ECON 301), ECON 353, ECON 354. You may have taken courses equivalent to the prerequisites of some courses in your own department, check them in the system (Note: especially valid for Statistics and Industrial Engineering students).
iv.	TWO ELECTIVE ECON CODED COURSES (ECON 2xx, ECON 3xx or ECON 4xx) can also be chosen in the core courses group above. Economics-related courses that are not coded ECON are not accepted for the minor program.
v.	You can have AT MOST 2 of the 6 ECON coded courses counted as credit courses in your own department’s program. This is up to your registration advisor in your own department. Please consult your registration advisor at your own department.

2.	It is recommended that students who are new to the minor program take one of the ECON 201 or ECON 202 courses in their first semester. Since these two courses are among the core courses of the department, it is not recommended to take these two courses together. It may be more appropriate to take only one course (ECON 201 or ECON 202) in the first semester to get used to the department courses. If the student's schedule allows, he/she can also take a course coded ECON 2xx, ECON 3xx or ECON 4xx in addition to one of these two courses. You can choose these courses by attending the first week classes of different courses that fit your schedule and interest you. If you do not meet the prerequisites for these courses, you can get special permission to enroll in the course by talking to the course instructor, depending on the course content. It is recommended that the total number of minor courses not exceed 2 in the first semester of the minor. If you cannot take both ECON 201 and ECON 202 courses due to scheduling conflicts, you can take 1 or 2 of the other courses.

3.	“I CANNOT REGISTER FOR COURSE!” First, determine the ECON courses that fit your course schedule. Then try to register online for the section of this course that fits your schedule. If you cannot register, you either do not meet a prerequisite or there is a surname restriction in the section. Check if you meet the prerequisites. If you meet the prerequisite, register for the other section, even if it does not fit your course schedule, but inform the minor advisor (“I need to take the x section of the xxx course, but I cannot take it due to the surname restriction; so I registered for the y section. I want a section change during the add-drop period”). After the add-drop period, section changes will be made manually (Inform the minor advisor and the section change can be made only after the add drop period). You do not need to submit a petition for this. If the quota appears to be full, the quota is usually increased on the last day of registration. Try again and contact the course instructor and the minor advisor for the quota increase. Apart from these two reasons (section restriction, quota), take the courses in which you cannot register for technical reasons in the first week, and inform the course instructor that you cannot register for the course. Sometimes you may have taken a course equivalent to the prerequisite, but the system may not technically recognize it. Such problems can be solved by registering with a petition during the add-drop period. If you report the problem to your admissions advisor, do not worry and wait for an announcement email from the minor coordinator.

4.	“I AM GOING TO ERASMUS”. When your major program is frozen, your minor program is automatically frozen as well. You do not need to take any further action. If you want to take an ECON course during Erasmus, send the syllabus of this course to your minor coordinator to check whether it will be counted in the minor program when you return. In general, it is not considered appropriate to count MUST courses, and electives are decided according to the syllabus.

5.	“MY MAJOR PROGRAM IS COMPLETED, MY MINOR IS NOT COMPLETED”. If you want to continue your minor program after graduation, you must apply to your advisor with a petition.

6.	“I CANNOT TAKE ANY MINOR COURSES THIS SEMESTER”. You must freeze your minor program with a petition.

7.	“I WANT TO QUIT MINOR PROGRAM”. If you do nothing, your minor program will terminate. If there are courses you would like to have counted in your major transcript, contact your department advisor first!
