Abstract

"Poverty is not only lack of sufficient income. It has many dimensions. As poverty deepens, there appears various definitions of poverty that differ in scope and range from relative poverty, severe material deprivation (SMD), severe material and social deprivation (SMSD) to extreme poverty and multidimensional poverty. Perceiving poverty as a violation of rights, “Who are the poor in Turkey?” is the broad research question of this study. There are three more specific questions: (1) Is there a mismatch between income poverty and social deprivation rates? (2) If so, how substantial is this mismatch? (3) What are the common characteristics of individuals who fall into these mismatched categories, particularly with respect to specific living condition indicators? In investigating answers, I utilize the 2023 Survey on Income and Living Conditions and use three poverty definitions: income poverty, SMD, and SMSD. The mismatch refers to the mismatch between income poverty and SMSD.
